Chapter 9

Following his scent, I find Ciaran sitting in the drawing room. He’s slumped on an overstuffed leather sofa, staring into space. I enter through the door behind him and halt a few paces away.

“I would have killed him,” Ciaran says without turning. “I would have killed him if you hadn’t stopped me. And then what would I have been? I would have been that mindless killer again. The one controlled by Marguerite and Portia. The one who turned Vienna and would have killed and killed and killed.”

I move to the sofa and sink down onto it. “Listen to me, Ciaran Connor,” I growl, putting as much authority as I can into my voice. “You are not that man anymore. You’re honorable and kind and selfless. You’re a rogue hunter who works tirelessly to keep London safe. You’re the best man I know.”

“Really?” he says, turning to look at me. “I thought that was Sam Davies.”

I recoil. That was a low blow. “Ciaran, don’t.”

“Don’t what? It all makes sense now—why you reacted the way you did when I asked you to marry me. All the time, you were seeing him again.”

“He had nothing to do with it! And I haven’t been seeing him again. I’ve been assigned to work with him, that’s all.”

His eyes find mine. “So if that’s all it is, why did you lie to me? I asked you, right to your face, who you were working with. And what did you say? ‘Just some MI5 agent’. Like it wasn’t important that it happened to be your ex.”

“Because it wasn’t! It isn’t!”

“So why lie about it?”

I open my mouth and snap it closed again. “Okay, I should have told you but I’m not the only one that’s been keeping secrets am I? You never told me your mission from the Synod was to guard Lord Matthias.”

“That’s different,” he growls. “I was under orders not to tell anyone.”

“So was I!”

I’m suddenly furious. Who the hell does he think he is, questioning me like this? This is getting us nowhere.

I jump to my feet and stalk to the door but pause on the threshold. “Look, we are still rogue hunters and we still have a job to do. Coming?”

Ciaran watches me for a few seconds, then nods. Together, we make our way back up to Lord Matthias’s bedroom. He’s awake again but there’s blood dripping from his nose, despite the handkerchief he’s holding to it. Good. Bastard.

Sam and Vienna turn as we enter. Sam glances between me and Ciaran, notes the distance we’re keeping from each other, but has the good grace not to look pleased. Instead, he’s all business as he strides over, holding a piece of paper.

“He’s talked. We have a list of names of vampires illegally sired by the dead men whilst they were rogues. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of them.”

I take the paper and read it. Damn. He’s right. There are a lot of names on that list. What are we supposed to do: arrest all of them?

“Seems your children were busy,” I say to Lord Matthias.
