Chapter 9
Following his scent, I find Ciaran sitting in the drawing room. Heâs slumped on an overstuffed leather sofa, staring into space. I enter through the door behind him and halt a few paces away.
âI would have killed him,â Ciaran says without turning. âI would have killed him if you hadnât stopped me. And then what would I have been? I would have been that mindless killer again. The one controlled by Marguerite and Portia. The one who turned Vienna and would have killed and killed and killed.â
I move to the sofa and sink down onto it. âListen to me, Ciaran Connor,â I growl, putting as much authority as I can into my voice. âYou are not that man anymore. Youâre honorable and kind and selfless. Youâre a rogue hunter who works tirelessly to keep London safe. Youâre the best man I know.â
âReally?â he says, turning to look at me. âI thought that was Sam Davies.â
I recoil. That was a low blow. âCiaran, donât.â
âDonât what? It all makes sense nowâwhy you reacted the way you did when I asked you to marry me. All the time, you were seeing him again.â
âHe had nothing to do with it! And I havenât been seeing him again. Iâve been assigned to work with him, thatâs all.â
His eyes find mine. âSo if thatâs all it is, why did you lie to me? I asked you, right to your face, who you were working with. And what did you say? âJust some MI5 agentâ. Like it wasnât important that it happened to be your ex.â
âBecause it wasnât! It isnât!â
âSo why lie about it?â
I open my mouth and snap it closed again. âOkay, I should have told you but Iâm not the only one thatâs been keeping secrets am I? You never told me your mission from the Synod was to guard Lord Matthias.â
âThatâs different,â he growls. âI was under orders not to tell anyone.â
âSo was I!â
Iâm suddenly furious. Who the hell does he think he is, questioning me like this? This is getting us nowhere.
I jump to my feet and stalk to the door but pause on the threshold. âLook, we are still rogue hunters and we still have a job to do. Coming?â
Ciaran watches me for a few seconds, then nods. Together, we make our way back up to Lord Matthiasâs bedroom. Heâs awake again but thereâs blood dripping from his nose, despite the handkerchief heâs holding to it. Good. Bastard.
Sam and Vienna turn as we enter. Sam glances between me and Ciaran, notes the distance weâre keeping from each other, but has the good grace not to look pleased. Instead, heâs all business as he strides over, holding a piece of paper.
âHeâs talked. We have a list of names of vampires illegally sired by the dead men whilst they were rogues. Unfortunately, thereâs a lot of them.â
I take the paper and read it. Damn. Heâs right. There are a lot of names on that list. What are we supposed to do: arrest all of them?
âSeems your children were busy,â I say to Lord Matthias.
